Ingredients

Cayenne pepper (also called Capsicum frutescens) is a stimulating herb made from the dried pods of chili peppers and is well known for its pungent taste and smell. 

Cayenne is a popular spice used in many different regional styles of cooking, but it has also been used medicinally for thousands of years. It was considered helpful for various conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, including stomach aches, cramping pains and gas. Cayenne was frequently used to treat diseases of the circulatory system. It is still traditionally used in herbal medicine as a circulatory tonic (a substance believed to improve circulation).

The active ingredient of cayenne is called capsaicin. Capsaicin is the component of peppers that gives them their heat. Peppers are measured according to heat units. Generally, the hotter the pepper, the more capsaicin it contains. In addition to adding heat to the pepper, capsaicin acts to reduce platelet stickiness and relieve pain.

Side Effects

Cayenne can produce irritation of the gastrointestinal tract in sensitive individuals. It may also produce sweating and flushing of the head and neck, as well as excess secretion of tears and discharge from the nasal mucosa.
