Pomegranate (Punica granatum) contains a rich source of an antioxidant known as ellagic acid, which helps to prevent cell damage in the body caused by highly reactive compounds known as free radicals. Free radicals are created in our bodies during the normal process of metabolism; they also arise from external sources such as smoking, pollution and overexposure to the sun. Free radicals cause oxidation, a chemical reaction that damages cells and DNA. Pomegranate protects cells from oxidation by helping to mop up free radicals before they can cause any internal harm.

A number of studies indicate that pomegranate juice has many beneficial effects on the health of the cardiovascular system. For example, pomegranate supports heart health by preventing the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Oxidized LDL cholesterol can lead to the development of athersclerosis, a build-up of plaque in the arteries that can inhibit normal circulation of oxygenated blood to the tissues.
