Selenium is recognized as an antioxidant for the maintenance of good health. Selenium is an essential element for normal development, growth, and metabolism because of its role in the regulation of thyroid hormones. Humans require selenium for the function of a number of selenium-dependent enzymes, also known as selenoproteins. At least 25 selenoproteins have been identified. The typical Canadian diet is thought to be lacking in selenium, because of decreasing quantities in agricultural soils and hence the food supply. Our selenium is yeast-free and vegetarian.
