Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the body. It is produced primarily in skeletal muscle and then released into circulation. Tissues that require glutamine include the immune system, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and liver.
- Scientific evidence appears to support the use of L-glutamine for chemotherapy-induced mucositis as it seems to enhance intestinal absorption of nutrients. Glutamine seems to improve nutritional and immunologic status, and reduces complications in the critically ill through its ability to aid the digestive tract and the immune system.
- L-glutamine can be used for HIV wasting, improving intestinal permeability and function, and for chemotherapy-induced mucositis.
L-glutamine has been used in the past for depression, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, short bowel syndrome, enhancing exercise performance, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cystinuria, peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis, sickle cell anemia, improving recovery after bone marrow transplant, and for alcohol withdrawal support. However, the scientific evidence shows limited effectiveness for these ailments.
